MILWAUKEE – The Alverno softball team hosted the nationally-ranked MSOE Raiders on a sunny and warm Saturday afternoon on the Alverno Softball Field, and fell to their guests by the scores of 14-0 in the opener and 13-0 in game two.
Â
Alverno was led by sophomore
Izzy Torres, who collected two hits on the afternoon with a pair of singles in game two. Senior
Lauren Greif and freshman
Izzy Luevano both had singles, while freshman
Maggie Wilmot tallied her first career hit with a single in the opener.
Â
Torres was also the starter and the finisher inside the circle for the Inferno in game one, as she tossed 3 2/3 innings and yielded five earned runs as she took the loss in the opener. Greif registered four outs in between Torres appearances and allowed just two earned runs.
Â
Senior
Kaitlynn Schmick got the start in game two and was able to strike out three batters over four innings of work as she tossed over 100 pitches for the fourth consecutive outing. Greif tossed one more inning in the second game and struck out one batter without allowing a run as she needed just seven pitches to get through her frame.
Â
Game 1
No. 17 MSOE jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, including a leadoff home run to open the afternoon. Alverno got a one-out baserunner on with a bunt single in the bottom of the first off the bat of Luevano but were unable to capitalize.
Â
MSOE added three more runs in the second inning, and threatened in the top of the third with two runners on with two down. Greif came on to pitch and got a fly ball to end the Raider rally. In the bottom of the third, Wilmot recorded her first career hit with a pop single on the infield.
Â
The Raiders added one more run in the top of the fourth and doubled up their run production with a seven-run fifth inning to extend their lead to 14. Alverno was unable to get a runner on in the bottom of the fifth, as the Inferno fell by the 14-0 score.
Â
Game 2
Schmick opened the second game with a strong showing as MSOE was only able to get a one-out bunt single. A one-out walk in the top of the second was thwarted by Schmick, as the game progressed into the third inning with no score.
Â
In the top of the third, the Raiders scored six runs on seven hits to open up the scoring before Schmick was able to strand a pair of runners with a strikeout.
Â
Torres led off the bottom of the third with a single, but was erased three batters later on a fielder's choice to end the effort in the inning. MSOE tacked on seven more runs on four hits, as the Inferno committed a pair of errors in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 13-0.
Â
Alverno got a runner on base with one out in the bottom of the fourth as Lemonds reached on an error by the Raiders before moving up to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Greif singled to put runners on the corner before the rally was ended without a run scoring.
Â
Greif came on in the top of the fifth and allowed a one-out single but was able to avoid any damage, by stranding the runner on first. Torres singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but the final three batters went down on strikes as the Raiders picked up the 13-0 win.
