Volleyball's Saturday Afternoon Matinee Spoiled by Dominican

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno volleyball team hosted the Dominican Stars on Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup, with the Stars picking up the three-set win by the scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-12.

Alverno was once again led by freshman Rolin West, who tallied 12 kills on the afternoon, while also helping on the defensive effort with 10 digs. Sophomore Selena Upshur had eight kills, and led the team with a .467 hitting percentage, while recording seven digs on the night.

Senior Alex McMath contributed with 25 assists on the night, and collected one kills with five digs. Sophomore Jenna Flayter collected five kills and hit .214 on the match while picking up three digs and leading the Inferno with a pair of blocks.

Sophomore Kiara Ellison collected two digs on the afternoon to bring her season total to 35.

Dominican took the first six points of the match, and extended its lead to 10-2. Alverno was unable to string together any offensive rallies, as the Stars took the opening set 25-11.

Alverno opened the second set with the first two points on a service ace by McMath and a kill by West, but Dominican was able to tie the score before taking the lead at 4-3. The Inferno evened the score at five before a three-point run by the Stars gave the guests a lead they did not surrender the rest of the period despite a 7-1 run by the Inferno to trim the deficit to two at 21-19. Dominican closed out the set with four unanswered points.

A nine-point run for the Stars to open the set put the Inferno at a disadvantage early before a block by Flayter thwarted the lengthy rally. The Inferno scored two of the next three points to pull back within seven at 10-3. Alverno got back within five points an 15-10 after a kill by West, but a six-point rally by Dominican put the Stars ahead 21-10, before closing out the match with a 25-12 third set.

Alverno (1-15, 0-12 NACC) will wrap up the 2021 season on Wednesday evening, when the Inferno host the St. Norbert Green Knights for their first-ever conference meeting, as St. Norbert joined the league during the summer of 2021.
