AURORA, Ill. – The Alverno volleyball team was on the road taking on the Aurora Spartans on Friday evening against the host Spartans, with the host winning the match in three sets. The set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-15.

The Inferno hit .165 on the night as a team, with 29 kills as a unit. Freshman
Rolin West led Alverno with a dozen kills, while senior
Alex McMath and sophomore
Selena Upshur were second on the team with seven kills apiece. Sophomore
Jenna Flayter tacked on three kills to cap off the offensive output.

The Inferno also had four service aces on the night, led by McMath, who tallied a pair. Upshur and West each picked up one ace apiece. Alverno also had one block on the night with that coming from Flayter.

Defensively the Inferno registered 38 digs as a team, with 17 defensive scoops coming from West, while Upshur added eight. McMath was third on the team with five digs, with Flayter and classmate
Zahria Green each had three digs, with two more digs coming from sophomore
Kiara Ellison.

Aurora jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the opening set, before that lead swelled to 14-6. A pair of errors gave service back to Alverno and sparked a 5-2 run for the Inferno, as McMath added a pair of kills to pull Alverno within five at 16-11. The Spartans closed out the set at 25-16.

In the second period, the first four points were split evenly with a 2-2 score. After an 8-4 lead was taken by the Spartans, West notched a kill to spark a brief 3-1 run, which was also capped off on a kill by West to keep the Inferno within two at 9-7. The Inferno closed the margin to within give at 22-17 late in the set, and then four at 23-19 on an ace by McMath. Ultimately, Aurora picked up the final two points at 25-19.

Aurora closed out the match with a swift third set, as the Spartans took an early 5-1 lead, and never allowed the Inferno to get back within three aside from a 10-7 score. An 8-2 run gave Aurora a 22-12 lead before the Spartans closed out the match at 25-15.

Alverno (1-10, 0-8 NACC) will be back in action again tomorrow evening, as the Inferno take on Rockford in a conference match before taking on Mount Mary immediately after in a non-conference tilt.
