LEESBURG, Fla. – The Alverno softball team split action once again on Wednesday as the team knocked off the Hood Blazers by the score of 4-3 in the second game at the Sleepy Hollow Athletic Complex. Earlier in the day, the Inferno dropped a 12-0 decision to the D'Youville Spartans.
Â
A pair of Inferno had multi-hit days as junior
Kaitlynn Schmick and freshman
Seneca Peterson led the Inferno, including a double by Peterson. Freshman
Izzy Torres recorded her first-career hit with a three-run home run in the second inning of the matchup with Hood; she later had a bases-loaded walk as she drove in all four runs on the day.
Â
Peterson once again had a strong pitching outing in the second game against the Blazers, as she amassed another eight strikeouts without allowing an earned run over seven innings of work on 116 pitches.
Â
Torres made her collegiate pitching debut in the opener and was only able to retire one batter, while sophomore
Natalie Akin was able to close out the first inning. Schmick came on to cap off the final three innings in the circle while striking out three.

Schmick stemmed the tide in the bottom of the third as she retired the side in order, and did so again in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
The Inferno were unable to muster any offense against the D'Youville pitcher, who pitched the shutout.

Game 2 vs. Hood
Peterson allowed a leadoff knock to left centerfield to open the game in the top of the first put got the next three batters on eight pitches to bring the Inferno up to bat. Peterson walked but was erased on a double play as the game moved to the second inning.
Â
Akin got the second inning going with a one-out single before freshman
Zimri Lemonds singled to put two runners on. Up next was Torres, who sent a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to put Alverno on the board with a three spot. Alverno nearly added another run as freshman
Jaden Rieck reached on an error, ahead of a double by Peterson, which was ruled a ground-rule double sending Rieck back to third.
Â
In the third, Peterson struck out the first two batters and got a lineout before Alverno threatened again in the bottom of the third before stranding a pair on base.
Â
Schmick singled to lead off the fifth, before being replaced on a fielder's choice by freshman

Chloe Cech ran for Gamboa to bring up junior
Lauren Greif, who reached on a fielder's choice as the fielder's throw towards second went into the outfield for an error.
Â
Akin reached on the third fielder's choice of the inning before Lemonds walked to load the bases. Torres walked with the bases full to bring across the fourth Inferno run before the side was retired.
Â
In the top of the sixth the Blazers were able to plate a trio of runs, before Peterson stranded a pair on base on a comebacker to the originator. Alverno looked to add some insurance to its run total in the bottom of the sixth but left the bases full.
Â
Peterson went back to the circle looking to close the door and got a popup to Akin to open the frame before striking out the final two batters to collect her second win of the season.
Â
