Season Closes for Alverno Basketball in Loss to Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno basketball season came to a close on Wednesday evening as the Inferno hosted the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors inside the Reiman Gymnasium. The Warriors won the game by a 91-47 final.

Alverno had three players in double figures on the season as freshman Eniya Madden led the team with 14 points on the night, connecting on five field goals. Fellow rookie Keeshya Bellows also had five field goals for 11 points, while senior Sara Redlin capped off her career with a 10-point effort including a pair of three-pointers on the game.

Junior Alicia Hornbuckle led the Inferno with seven rebounds, while freshman Angie Reutgen was second on the team with six boards. Bellows had four blocks, while it was Madden to lead the team with six assists and three steals. With her six assists, Madden tied the single-season record with 130 assists in one season that had been previously set by Gabby Hood '18 during the 2016-17 season.

Rounding out the scoring for the Inferno as Hornbuckle ended her season with an eight-point effort while junior Dom Hudson and sophomore Brittney Hondel each had one from the floor. Junior Mikayla Tessay had two rebounds on the night as the Inferno ended the game with 34 as a squad.

Wisconsin Lutheran took the opening period by a 19-11 score, but not after an early lead by the Inferno. Hudson and Redlin each had layups in the early-going, while Madden had a jumper to put the Inferno ahead 6-4, the lead quickly went away on five unanswered by Wisconsin Lutheran before a Bellows jumper made it a one-possession game once again. Bellows had three more points down the stretch to give Alverno 11 points.

In the second, the Warriors flexed their muscle by outscoring Alverno 32-8 as Wisconsin Lutheran connected on 54.1% from the field in the opening half. Madden scored all eight for the Inferno in the period.

After the break, Wisconsin Lutheran added to its lead with a 21-12 margin in the third quarter and a slim 19-16 score in the final quarter to run away with the 91-47 victory.

Alverno finishes the season with a 5-20 record, with all five wins coming in conference play. The Inferno will have plenty of pieces from this year's team returning next season with just Redlin as the lone senior to graduate from the squad. The 2020-21 schedule will be posted during the summer months, with the start date of the season expected to be in mid-November.
