Big Performances Lead Alverno to Conference Victory over Marian, 73-62

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Alverno basketball team got several big individual performances as the Inferno downed the Marian Sabres by the score of 73-62 inside the Sadoff Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Leading the way on the scoresheet was junior Alicia Hornbuckle, who led the offense with a 22-point effort as she led the team with 10 field goals on the night, while also adding five assists. Freshman Eniya Madden had 12 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double and third of the season. Madden also led the Inferno with eight assists and three steals.

Another big performance came from freshman Keeshya Bellows, who recorded a career-best 17 rebounds, while also amassing 16 points as she had 10 points and 10 rebounds at the halftime break. Bellows led the Inferno with four blocks as she went 7-for-12 from the field. Bellows' 17 rebounds was the largest individual performance on the glass since Donna Zehner '18 collected 17 against Lakeland in Plymouth during the 2016-17 season. The program record for rebounds in a game is 20, set back during the program's inaugural season by Lisa Hochschild '03 at home against Dominican.

Junior Dom Hudson had eight points on 3-of-8 from the field for her highest point total since scoring 11 at home against Benedictine on January 30. Senior Sara Redlin had one three-pointer on the night to extend her single-season record, while both sophomore Brittney Hondel and freshman Angie Reutgen had six points apiece. Hondel added four rebounds on the night as well.

The Inferno led by a 21-11 score after the opening 10 minutes as Madden and Hornbuckle gave Alverno an early 4-0 lead. Bellows and Hudson also got in on the scoring action including a last-second three-pointer by Hudson to put the road team ahead by the 10-point margin heading into the second quarter.

Redlin opened the second quarter with her lone field goal of the night, coming from distance to put Alverno ahead by 13. After exchanging a series of baskets, Madden put Alverno up 14 with 1:54 left in the half, before Bellows knocked down a jumper on the next offensive possession to give the Inferno a 16-point lead. Marian closed out the half on back-to-back jumpers as the Inferno lead shrunk to 12 at 37-25 midway through the game.

After an evenly matched third quarter that saw the Inferno and Sabres deadlocked at 19 apiece in the period, the Inferno held their 12-point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Hornbuckled opened the scoring in the fourth with a jumper, which was answered by five-straight from the Sabres. Hondel got on the board with a pair of jumpers to keep the lead at double digits. Marian cut the lead down to seven at 62-55 with 3:39 left in the game before Reutgen connected on a key jumper to put Alverno back up by nine.

Marian closed the lead back down to eight with 25 seconds to go on a made three-pointer, before the Inferno got solo free throws by Hornbuckle, Madden, and Reutgen to ice the game and give Alverno the season sweep over the Sabres, extending its win streak to nine overall against Marian including five straight at Sadoff Gymnasium.

Alverno (5-18, 5-13 NACC) will wrap up the road slate on Saturday afternoon when the Inferno travel to nearby foe Milwaukee School of Engineering for a 4:15 p.m. tip against the Raiders inside the Kern Center.
