Inferno Stymied by Eagles in 2020 Home Opener

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno basketball team dropped a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference decision to the Edgewood Eagles on Wednesday evening, falling to their guests by an 80-57 margin inside Reiman Gymnasium.

Alverno was able to outscore the Eagles in the second half by a 39-31 margin, but the Eagles had built up a large enough lead during the opening 20 minutes of regulation to hold the Inferno rally off.

The Inferno were led by freshman Eniya Madden, who recorded 22 points on the game as she fell just one point shy of matching her season high set back on November 9 versus Northland. Madden had her second-highest steal total of the season with seven swipes as she had nine during her collegiate debut against Blackburn.

Junior Alicia Hornbuckle was second on the team with 16 points, as she fell just one rebound shy of a double-double, while also adding two assists and one steal. Senior Sara Redlin and junior Dom Hudson each had six points on the game, while freshman Keeshya Bellows added four points and five rebounds.

Junior Mikayla Tessay had one basket for two points and had two rebounds, while sophomore Brittney Hondel had one point and three assists. Freshman Angie Reutgen had two rebounds in her 22 minutes on the court.

Following the opening quarter, Alverno trailed 23-7 and were outscored in the second quarter by a 26-11 margin as the Inferno trailed 49-18 at the half.

In the second half, the Inferno were able to get as close as 28 points following back-to-back layups by Hornbuckle and Hudson. Ultimately Edgewood scored the last two points of the third quarter as the Eagles led by a 66-36 score after three quarters of play.

In the fourth, Redlin kick-started the offense with a three-pointer, answered by a layup from the Eagles. Madden connected on a layup after a steal as Alverno trailed 68-41 with 8:39 to go in regulation. Madden had 12 of Alverno's 21 points in the final stanza, as Hornbuckle added six coupled with Redlin's three-pointer to open the period.

Alverno (2-12, 2-7 NACC) will have a bye on Thursday, while the majority of the league is in action. The Inferno return home on Saturday evening, when the team welcomes Rockford for the only meeting of the season between Alverno and the Regents. The start of the game will be at 7 p.m. and follow the annual Alumnae Game, which begins earlier in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
