Alverno Nets Pair in Conference Action against Lakeland

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Alverno soccer team played against the Lakeland Muskies and some brisk and rainy weather conditions on Sunday afternoon and fell by the score of 4-2 on Taylor Field.

Alverno was led by sophomore Shaye Wolfe, who had the opening goal of the contest before she later added the assist on a goal by junior Jess Flores to give Alverno the lead by a 2-1 score heading into the halftime break. Freshman Faith Josko recorded the first assist of her career as she had the helper on Wolfe's opening tally. Junior Alexandra Donowa also had one shot on the match.

In goal freshman Kenzie Bermudez made 17 stops on the afternoon while allowing the four goals by the Muskies.

Wolfe got the Inferno on the board in the 14th minute of the game as Josko fed her the ball up the left wing before Wolfe finished with a shot to beat the Muskie goalkeeper to put the Inferno ahead by a 1-0 score.

Lakeland responded just over two minutes later at the 16:12 mark of the opening half to even the score at one apiece.

As the half progressed to the latter stages, Alverno was awarded a corner kick and Wolfe sent the ball into the box that was headed into the goal by Flores to put the Inferno ahead by a 2-1 score.

At the halftime break, Alverno was outshot 17-7 and held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks, while Bermudez had nine of her 17 saves in the first half. However, the Inferno led on the scoreboard heading into the final 45 minutes of regulation.

In the second half the Muskies were able to even the score once again at the 53:53 mark of the game on a strong shot that was beyond the reach of the outstretched arms of Bermudez as the score was tied at two.

Lakeland scored twice more in the span of 2:06 to put the game out of reach at a 4-2 margin as the Inferno were outshot 17-4 in the second half. The Muskies had 34 total shots to Alverno's 11, while corner kicks were also in favor of the Muskies at a 13-7 margin.

Alverno (4-5, 0-2 NACC) will get back to action on Wednesday afternoon, when the team hosts the Dominican Stars for a 3:30 pm start on the Alverno Soccer Field.
