MILWAUKEE – For the third time this season the Alverno basketball team travelled to the Bloechl Center on the Mount Mary University campus for a non-conference matchup, this time taking on the host Blue Angels on Tuesday evening. Despite holding an eight-point lead late in the first quarter, the early cushion was not enough as the Blue Angels came out with the 70-55 victory.
Â
Alverno led 13-5 with 2:17 to go in the opening quarter after a strong start overall by the Inferno with seven of the early 13 points coming from freshman Eniya Madden, who ended the night with a game-high 21 points for her third 20-point performance at the Bloechl Center this season, including her season-high 23-point effort against Northland on November 9.
Â
In addition to her scoring prowess, Madden had also added seven rebounds, five assists a block and four steals to her ledger to lead the way for the Inferno. Junior Alicia Hornbuckle added 12 points and had two assists to go along with three rebounds.
Â
Freshman Keeshya Bellows pounded the glass for another 10-carom performance, while also adding one assist and one steal to her eight points. Senior Sara Redlin played all 40 minutes and connected on three long-range two-point shots to cap her scoring night at six.
Â
Junior Mikayla Tessay played 24 minutes and picked up four points and three rebounds, while classmate Dom Hudson was 1-of-4 from the field for two points while finishing second on the team with three assists. Freshman Angie Reutgen made her Inferno debut and played 12 minutes while scoring her first Alverno field goal.
Â
Following Alverno's early 13-5 stretch to open the game, the Blue Angels closed out the opening quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a one-point game with 30 minutes to play. Mount Mary added the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 20-13 lead before Hornbuckle connected on a jumper to stem the tide and get the Inferno back within five. Mount Mary ended the quarter on an 11-8 run to take a 10-point lead into the break at 33-23.
Â
Mount Mary continued to add to its lead, with a 19-16 advantage in the third quarter before outscoring Alverno by an 18-16 margin in the fourth quarter for the 15-point win at 70-55.
Â
Madden led the Inferno in the second half with 14 points on 4-of-8 from the field, while also picking up four of her five assists in the second half of the game. All seven of the Inferno players scored in the second half as Alverno shot 43.3% from the field including a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, all taken by Madden.
Alverno (2-7) will be back home on Thursday evening at 6 p.m., when the Inferno welcome the Maranatha Sabercats to Reiman Gymnasium to close out the 2019 calendar year. The matchup with Maranatha will also be the final non-conference game of the season as Alverno's final 16 games will all be NACC competitions, with seven of those coming at home.
