Mathies Registers 1,000th Career Point in Road Game at Edgewood

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. – It was yet another historic evening in the young history of Alverno College athletics on Tuesday evening as senior Mackenzie Mathies became the fourth player in the history of the basketball program to record 1,000 career points.

Mathies joins elite company, which includes former teammate Mollie Mikyska (1,030 points); Lisa Sorgi (1,244 points); and the program's all-time scoring leader Gabby Allen (1,286 points). With her team-leading eight points tonight, Mathies now has 1,006 for her 90-game career.

Needing just two points to reach the millennium mark, Mathies went 0-for-6 from the field in the opening half before the moment came early in the third quarter. With 8:39 left in the third Mathies took a pass from senior classmate Dani Hood, and took a shot from the right of the free throw line that banked off the glass and into the cylinder to reach the 1,000 point mark.

Mathies later went on to add five more points in the third quarter, while adding one point in the fourth for her team-best eight points. Mathies also led the Inferno on the night with seven rebounds and four assists as she was tied with classmate Karli Selear for the team lead with two steals.

In addition to Mathies' scoring, Selear was tied for the team lead with eight points of her own. Hood had another strong outing as she tied her second highest point total of the season with seven. Sophomore Sara Redlin also notched seven points, including one three-pointer.

Also getting on the scoresheet was sophomore Kailey Kennow with four points, while senior Justice Hawkins had three points. Senior Kendra Patterson toughed through 16 minutes on the court and ended the night with four rebounds and one assist.

Alverno struggled as a team shooting just 22% from the field and trailed 31-13 at the halftime break. Edgewood scored the first field goal of the second half, before Mathies' historic shot made the score 33-15 in favor of Edgewood.

Mathies, Hood and Kennow all connected on shots in the third quarter as the Inferno went into the final stanza trailing by 15 at 39-24. In the fourth the Eagles iced the game with another 17 points, while Alverno scored a game-high 14 points in the fourth to round out the scoring, as Edgwood emerged victorious by a 56-37 score.

Alverno (3-10, 2-6 NACC) will be back home on Thursday, when the Inferno host the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons for a 7 p.m. start from Reiman Gymnasium.
