Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Brad Duckworth collected his 100th win as head coach of Alverno College as the Inferno topped visiting Rockford University, 70-56, Wednesday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.
Brooke McBain led all scorers with a career-high 23 points as the senior forward made all four of her 3-point attempts and was 8-of-14 overall from the floor. Donna Zehner added 13 and Julie Gallegos was 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc for nine points, as the Inferno made 45 percent (9-of-20) from long range.
Alverno (11-11, 8-9 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led the entire game. A 32-26 halftime lead swelled to 54-44 at the end of the third quarter, and got up to as many as 15 late in the fourth, as the Regents (2-20, 0-17 NACC) didn't threaten.
Duckworth, in his ninth season leading the Inferno, has 165 wins in his coaching career including 37 victories at the State University of New York at New Paltz and 28 at Western Technical College. He is the all-time winningest coach in Alverno history.
"I've helped put really good players in position to win over the course of time and they've done that," Duckworth said. "It means a lot to me. There's been some really cool moments in eight-and-a-half years -- to think we've got to 100 wins. It's a special evening and I'm proud of our players tonight to get this win."
Tonight's win keeps the Inferno in the running for the final spot of the NACC tournament, as they trail Saturday's opponent, Lakeland College (12-10, 11-6), by three games with three to play. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
