Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College earned its second-straight berth to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament with a 71-61 triumph over visiting Lakeland College Saturday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
Ashley Berry led all scorers with a career-high 24 points as she shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in the Inferno's third-straight win over the Muskies.
After the teams traded the lead nine times in the first half, the Muskies earned the last of the period and led 34-32 at the break.
Mollie Mikyska scored the first hoop of the second half to tie the game, and Jamie Hoernke scored the following Inferno possession to give the host team a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
The Muskies (8-13, 5-11 NACC) kept the game within reach until put-back by Mikyska with 3 minutes to play gave the Inferno its first double-digit lead of the game, 61-51.
Lakeland would score the next five points of the contest to keep the game within two possessions, but Berry and Mikyska sealed the Inferno victory at the free-throw line as the duo combined to make the final 12 attempts from the charity stripe.
Mikyska recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds--both career highs--and Devon Gorman added her second-consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Gorman was two assists shy of a triple-double, adding a career and game-high eight assists.
Hoernke was the fourth Inferno player in double-figures with 16 points and added seven rebounds to Alverno's season-best 52 boards. The Muskies had just 31 rebounds on the night.
The Inferno (14-8, 11-6 NACC) looks to maintain its spot in the top third of the conference standings with three regular-season games left to play. A finish in one of the first four places secures a home game in the first round of the NACC tournament and the Inferno is 9-1 inside Reiman Gymnasium this season.
Alverno hits the road on Wednesday at Rockford University for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
