Box Score ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Four Inferno players reached double-digit scoring totals to lead a balanced attack as visiting Alverno College topped host Rockford University 85-72 inside the Seaver Center on Wednesday night.
Jamie Hoernke posted game highs with 23 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season as the Inferno (15-8, 12-6 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) won its third-straight game and pulled into third place in the NACC standings with an addition of a last-second Edgewood College loss.
Ashley Berry added 20 points on 10-of-21 shooting, Devon Gorman was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line to add 18 points, while Kristen Speerschneider chipped in 10 points and a game-best four assists.
Jessica Bjerning, Katie Clark and Lindsay Lengjak scored 13 points apiece for the host Regents (9-14, 6-12 NACC) who are still vying for the final NACC tournament slot.
Alverno trailed just once in the contest as the Regents scored on the opening possession. The Inferno quickly anwered and went ahead by 10 points within the first 5 minutes of play. Rockford pulled within five with a minute to play in the first half, but the Inferno scored on the final possession of the period for the 37-30 halftime lead.
The Inferno opened the second half on a 10-3 run to double their lead and went up 18 after a Berry jumper with just under 10 minutes to go.
The Regents closed the gap to eight on multiple occasions in the final minutes of play, but Alverno connected on its final six trips to the charity stripe to keep the game out of the Regents' reach.
Alverno returns home to end the regular season with two-straight home games in Reiman Gymnasium. The Inferno, which already clinched a spot in the NACC tournament, hosts Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday at 7 p.m., and then hosts Aurora University on Tuesday night.
