Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Anna Boteva made five 3-pointers for a game-high 21 points as Alverno College won its final nonconference game of the season, 74-60, over visiting Bethany Lutheran College Friday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
"Boteva shot the ball really well," Alverno Head Coach Brad Duckworth said. "She came out and looked aggressive tonight. She took 19 shots, that's a lot for her, but at the end of the day they kept leaving her open and she's a great 3-point shooter."
Ashley Berry added 16 points and seven rebounds as the Inferno (8-4) snapped a brief two-game skid and went 3-2 in non-league play this season.
Jamie Hoernke scored the game's first four points as Alverno led the entire way including its largest lead, 70-50, with just over 2 minutes to play.
The Inferno connected on 46 percent of its shot attempts, held the Vikings to under 34 percent from the field and forced 15 turnovers.
Kasslin Swenson led the Vikings (2-7) with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Aimie Wiechmann scored 10 on 3-of-10 shooting.
Although Bethany Lutheran scored 18 bench points to Alverno's 12, Katie Bartlett provided a much-needed spark as the Inferno's starting post players--Hoernke and Devon Gorman--got into foul trouble early in the second half.
The rookie forward made 5-of-6 shot attempts for 10 points, added five rebounds, a block and an assist in 18 minutes of action.
"The bench was huge, and it's going to be huge down the stretch of the season. Bartlett played a great game tonight," complemented Duckworth. "Seeing her play the way she played tonight was fantastic."
Hoernke finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Gorman added eight points and a team-best 12 rebounds. The duo combined for a perfect 7-of-7 performance from the free-throw line as the team made 10-of-13 attempts.
Kristen Speerschneider, the Inferno's all-time assists leader, added seven more to her career total and committed just a single turnover in 32 minutes of play.
"What a great way to get started in 2014," added Duckworth.
The Inferno returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play tomorrow as it visits Edgewood College for a 4:15 p.m. tipoff in Madison. Alverno defeated the Eagles 70-61 in Milwaukee the opening week of the season.
