Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The University of Dubuque defeated Alverno College 82-69 in the Inferno's final game at the Basketball Destinations St. Pete Classic at Eckerd College.
The Inferno (7-4) fell behind 49-28 by the halftime break, but cut the deficit to 10 points on a pair of Kristen Speerschneider free throws with 10 minutes to play. However, the Spartans (7-3) did not allow the Inferno to get any closer the remainder of play.
Devon Gorman recorded her first double-double of the season with game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Inferno, while Jamie Hoernke added 15 points, Ashley Berry chipped in nine points and Speerschneider dished out a game-best seven assists.
Jenna Kotas' 21 points and nine rebounds led the Spartans while Emily Brinker added 16 points.
Dubuque out-rebounded Alverno 53-36, including 19-11 on the offensive glass.
The Inferno is off until after the holidays when it hosts Bethany Lutheran College on Friday, Jan. 3 in the final nonconference game of the season.
