Hoernke Scores 32, Speerschneider Becomes Alverno's Assists Leader As Inferno Rolls Scarlet Hawks

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Jamie Hoernke scored 32 points and Kristen Speerschneider became Alverno College's all-time assists leader as the Inferno rolled visiting Illinois Institute of Technology 67-37 Wednesday night in Reiman Gymnasium.

Alverno led the entire contest as the host team scored the first 14 points of the game and cruised to a 31-10 halftime lead.

Speerschneider recorded her third assist just 6 minutes into play on an Ashley Berry layup that surpassed Joslyn Binkowski's career mark of 234 assists. The senior point guard would finish with a game-high seven assists to put her career total at 239.

The Scarlet Hawks (1-11) opened the second half on a 4-0 run to cut the difference to 17 points, but the Inferno responded and went up 45-20 with 13 minutes to play.

A pair of Hoernke free throws extended the Inferno lead to a game-high 33 points with 6:30 remaining, before back-to-back scores by Illinois Tech would set the spread to under 30 for one last time. Alverno would close out the game on an 8-6 run for the final 30-point difference.

Hoernke's 32 points tied the Alverno single-game record set by Emily Zawikowski on Feb. 16, 2002. The senior forward became just the third player in school history to score at least 30 points. Devon Gorman, who chipped in eight points tonight, posted 30 just two weeks ago at Concordia University Chicago where Hoernke scored her previous career-high 26.

Hoernke was nearly unstoppable down low as she shot 11-of-14 from the field, was 10-of-16 from the free-throw line and added five rebounds and two steals.

Gorman snagged a team-best seven rebounds while Speerschneider led with four steals.

Illinois Tech's Lauren Capuano led the Scarlet Hawks with 12 points of 5-of-15 shooting and led all rebounders with 16 even though she fouled out of the game with over 4 minutes left, while Adrianna Maron added nine points on 3-of-14 shooting.

Alverno, off to its best start in school history at 7-2, opens play at the St. Petersburg Classic down in Florida on Friday versus Randolph College, and concludes the classic against the University of Dubuque on Saturday.
