Inferno Falls To Undefeated Falcons In Overtime

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. -- Visiting Alverno College took Concordia University Wisconsin to overtime, but lost to the undefeated Falcons 75-65 Monday night in Buuck Field House.

The Inferno (6-2, 5-2 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) were outscored 13-3 in the extra period as the Falcons (9-0, 7-0 NACC) scored the first eight points of overtime to pull away for good.

Near the end of regulation, the Inferno trailed 62-59, but Kristen Speerschneider was fouled on a drive to the basket with 8 seconds left on the clock. The senior point guard missed the pair of free throws, but Jamie Hoernke hauled in the offensive rebound and found Speerschneider near the top of the key who redeemed herself with the game-tying 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining.

Concordia got off a half-court attempt, but it was off the mark.

Up by as many as 12 points, Alverno led nearly the entire first half took a 30-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Falcons were held to just 24 percent shooting in the opening period, but made 9-of-10 free throws to keep pace with the Inferno's hot shooting (46 percent) to open the game.

Concordia made half of its shots in the second half to chip away at Alverno's lead and pulled ahead with 10 minutes to go for the first time since the game's opening minutes. The hosts went up by eight with just over 5 minutes left in regulation before the Inferno scored six-straight points to pull within a possession and Speerschneider's game-tying 3-pointer shortly followed.

Devon Gorman fouled out of the game with 37 seconds left in regulation, but still managed to lead Alverno with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field and 2-of-6 from the free-throw line. Ashley Berry and Hoernke added 16 points apiece as the only other Inferno in double-figures, while Hoernke also had a game-high 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Megan Coenen and Madelyn Landgraf combined to shoot 17-of-21 from the free-throw line and led the Falcons with 20 points apiece, as Concordia made 74 percent of its attempts from the charity stripe.

Meanwhile the Inferno made a season-low 44 percent of its free-throw attempts (7-of-16) for its first sub-50-percent performance since its season-ending defeat in the conference tournament quarterfinal last February.

Alverno looks to bounce back from the loss in its final home game of 2013 as it hosts Illinois Institute of Technology on Wednesday in the first of four-straight nonconference games.
