Offense Lifts Alverno To Big Win Over Dominican

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College posted its best offensive output of the season in an 86-55 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Dominican University on Tuesday night in Reiman Gymnasium.

Ten Inferno players scored in the rout, including five in double-figures, as the host bested its previous season-high by three points.

It was a back and forth first half as both teams shot well in the early going. Alverno (6-1, 5-1 NACC) went up 22-15 on a pair of Ashley Berry free throws, but the Stars (0-8, 0-4) scored the next five points to cut the deficit to two.

Alverno increased its inside attack as four Inferno post players--Katie Bartlett, Devon Gorman, Jamie Hoernke and Mollie Mikyska--contributed to the half-closing run, which was capped off by a Berry jumper in the closing seconds to put the Inferno up 43-32.

The Inferno made 55 percent of its shot attempts in the first half and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, while the Stars made 45 percent their field goals and were 3-of-4 from the line.

The Alverno defense stepped up its game in the second half and the offense kept its pace as the hosts went up 56-35 after the first 5 minutes of the period. The Stars were limited to just 24 percent shooting in the half, while the Inferno made half of its second-half shots.

"I thought we did we needed to do and played a really good game in the second half," Alverno Head Coach Brad Duckworth said.

An Elani Geinopolos 3-pointer with less than 2 minutes to play increased the spread to the largest of the night at 33 points, before the Stars scored the final basket of the game on the next possession.

Gorman led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Berry and Hoernke added 14. Bartlett and Mikyska posted season-highs with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

"We worked really hard on getting the ball in the post, and tonight I thought that showed," commented Duckworth. "And 31 points off the bench is fantastic."

Hoernke led the Inferno's 49-29 advantage on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Anna Boteva tied her career-best with a game-best six assists on the night, while Kristen Speerschneider had a game-high four steals.

Allie Tapanes led the Stars with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from the 3-point arc.

Alverno has the rest of the week off for finals, and returns to action at undefeated Concordia University Wisconsin next Monday in Mequon.
