Inferno iced by Eagles in NAC Challenge

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. -- Alverno College shot a season-low 26.3 percent today as host Edgewood College defeated the Inferno 72-43 in the Northern Athletics Conference North/South Challenge Game.

The challenge games pit the conference's North Division teams versus the South Division teams, based on the final conference standings. The game does not count as a conference game, but may be used as a tiebreaker for the qualifying teams in the NAC Tournament.

The Eagles (14-11) avenged the early-January loss to the Inferno (13-12) in Milwaukee, where Alverno shot a blistering 57.1 percent for the easy 76-57 victory. Today the Eagles cruised to the easy victory, earning the No. 5 seed in the 2010 NAC Tournament, while the Inferno fell to the No. 6 seed.

Alverno was trailing by only one, 17-16, with 6 minutes to play in the first half before the host Eagles used an 11-0 run to increase their lead to double-digits and coasted to victory.

Junior guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) led the Inferno in the scoring column, but was only 5-of-18 from the field. She also added seven rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Teammate Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go along with her game-high three steals.

Amber Hemp paced the Eagles with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, as the team shot nearly 42 percent from the floor, and 41.7 percent from the 3-point arc. The Eagles also dominated the boards with a 52-36 advantage in the game.

The Inferno will travel to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on No. 3 seed Lakeland College in a NAC quarterfinal on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. Alverno defeated the host Muskies, 61-55, back on Jan. 9, in Sheboygan. This will be the Inferno's first appearance in a NAC postseason tournament in any team sport.

The loss today may provide better matchups for Inferno in the tournament, even though they dropped to the No. 6 seed.

Alverno went 3-1 versus the three teams in their half of the tournament bracket, having defeated Lakeland and No. 7 Rockford College, and split with No. 2 Wisconsin Lutheran College this season. On the other hand, had the Inferno won today and been the No. 5 seed, they would have to get through three teams they held a 1-5 record against, splitting with No. 8 MSOE, and being swept in two-game series versus No. 1 Concordia University Wisconsin and No. 4 Benedictine University.
