Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Alverno College defeated Dominican University 72-66 tonight in Igini Sports Forum, pulling into a tie for first place in the Northern Athletics Conference South Division with Wisconsin Lutheran College.
"I thought we did some nice things offensively all night," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "We just made a few defensive mistakes that kept (Dominican) around, and they wouldn't go away. But the last 4 minutes of the game we really tuned up our defensive intensity, and made big shots and our free throws."
With the game tied at 58-58 with 4 minutes, 43 seconds remaining, Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) would score on a put-back to give the Inferno the two-point lead, and lead for good. A stop and a fastbreak layup by Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) would increase the Inferno lead to four.
The host Stars (8-15, 4-13 NAC) would cut the lead to 62-60 on the next possession before McComb would hit a 3-pointer and another put-back on consecutive possessions to give the Inferno a seven-point cushion.
Alverno (13-10, 11-6 NAC) would then hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 45 seconds to seal the victory. The Inferno would finish the game shooting 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, and 44 percent from the field.
Sorgi would lead all scorers and rebounders with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season in the winning effort. She shot a flawless 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and was 7-of-12 from the field. Sorgi also eclipsed the 200-assist milestone tonight, recording four assists on the night.
Teammate Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and was also 7-of-12 from the floor.
Junior guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) shot 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc for 16 points, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and game-high three blocks.
McComb scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds while freshman Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) added eight points and a team-high five assists.
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) led the Stars with a double-double, scoring 11 points and dishing out 11 assists.
The Inferno finish out their NAC schedule on Wednesday at MSOE (7 p.m.), while Wisconsin Lutheran hosts Dominican in their final NAC game. Alverno and Wisconsin Lutheran would be South Division co-champions if they both win on Wednesday--or both lose.
"Going into the last game of the year with a chance to win a division is exactly where we would want to be," said Duckworth.
