Box Score LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Alverno College failed to make it two in a row against UW-Superior today falling 68-55 in the La Crosse Holiday Classic at Mitchell Hall. Superior avenged a 54-47 loss to the Inferno from last season by outscoring Alverno 38-23 in the second half.
"It was a tough basketball game," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "We self-destructed, I guess, is the best way to put it."
Alverno (3-8) led 32-30 at the half, fueled by its hot shooting performance, hitting on 52 percent of its shots. But the rim was not as kind to the Inferno in the second period as they shot only 8-of-23 from the field, missing their final six field goal attempts and scoring only from the free-throw line the final 6 minutes, 54 seconds of the game.
The Yellowjackets (5-6) forced the Inferno into 28 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 34-33. They also shot a blistering 53.3 percent from the 3-point line led by Katie Zavodny, who was 4-of-7 from the arc, and Connie Urmanski (3-of-6) who had a team-high 15 points.
Alverno was led by Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) and Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) who each had 15 points, while Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) had 10 in the loss. Allen also had a team-high seven rebounds, but also committed six turnovers.
Freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.) had four blocks to bring her season total to 30, which sets the Alverno season record for blocked shots. The previous mark of 28 was set by Terri Webster in the 2002-03 season.
The Inferno play next on Monday, Jan. 4, as they host Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Conference game at 7 p.m. in the Reiman Gymnasium.
