Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia University Wisconsin defeated Alverno College, 70-64, in the consolation game of the Forester Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Lake Forest College this afternoon handing the Inferno their second straight loss.
"Two nights in a row we realized that we need to box out much better," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "But we responded to it, and the last 24 minutes of the game we rebounded as good as or better than we had all season. Unfortunately we didn't do it for a 7 minute stretch and it really hurt us in terms of the overall result of the game."
The Inferno (1-2) allowed the Flacons 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, which led to 13 second chance points, more than the difference in the game.
The Falcons had their biggest lead of the second half, 55-44, with 7:08 to play. The Inferno cut that lead to four with 1:19 remaining on a pair of free throws by freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.). But the Falcons responded with a 3-point shot by Asia Beckum (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) to extend the lead to 68-61 with a minute remaining.
The Inferno were unable to convert on the next two offensive possessions as CUW held on for the nonconference victory.
Alverno forced CUW into 21 turnovers while only committing 16, but shot a dismal 1-of-14 from the 3-point line, while the Falcons were 4-of-8.
CUW's Pearl Wallace (Viola, Wis/ Kickapoo) led all scorers with 23 points and also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Inferno were led by senior guard Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and four assists, Diedrich with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior guard Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) with nine points and four assists.
Diedrich also tied an Alverno single-game record with five blocked shots in the game, bringing her season total to 10 in just three games.
Sorgi was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts in the two games.
"Sorgi is a fighter," Duckworth said. "She played great offensively and led us in scoring. Yet what will be lost in the box score is how great she played defensively today."
The Inferno are winless in the all-time series versus CUW, but today's six point loss is the first game that has been decided by single digits against the Falcons.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday, Dec. 5, in a Northern Athletics Conference game in Mequon, Wis.
Alverno is next in action next Saturday, Nov. 28, hosting Concordia University Chicago (1-1) in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Reiman Gymnasium.
