MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College women's basketball team defeated Marian University, 68-58, at Reiman Gymnasium improving their record to 8-8 on the season (4-6 NAC). The eight victories ties the school record for wins in a season, set in the program's inaugural season, 2000-01.
The win also brings the Inferno back to .500 overall, and sets the school record for conference victories (4).
The first half went back and forth, as the lead would change hands seven times in the period. Alverno would regain the lead on a Joslyn Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.) layup at the 8:10 mark, and would finish out the half on a 21-11 run for a 35-24 halftime advantage.
Alverno would retain the lead the rest of the game, but Marian (3-12, 2-8 NAC) would cut the lead to one with 4:31 remaining but the Inferno would answer with a 10-0 run keeping the visiting Sabres at bay.
Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) would lead the Inferno in scoring with 19 points, while Bre Miller (Racine, Wis./Horlick) would add 17. Freshman Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) would chip in nine, going 3-of-6 from the three-point arc.
Sorgi would also lead the Inferno on the glass grabbing eight rebounds. Binkowski added five rebounds, passing Kim Murray (2006) on the all-time rebounding leader board, to become the school's all-time leading rebounder with 499 rebounds.
Alverno won the rebounding battle 32-30 in the game, and the Inferno also shot 50 percent from the field (23-of-46).
Coleen Moody (Mt. Calvary, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) led the Sabres in scoring with 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while Stephanie Bouchard (Menasha, Wis.) led Marian on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Inferno will host Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7pm in a NAC game.
