Inferno Bounces Back with Win at Dominican

Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's basketball team defeated host Dominican University, 54-50, in a Northern Athletics Conference game this afternoon in River Forest, Ill.

The Inferno (5-7, 2-5 NAC) played their fourth game in six days, and bounced back from back-to-back conference losses, including a heartbreaking loss to Lakeland College yesterday afternoon in Milwaukee.

Alverno fell behind 4-0, before going on a 18-8 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 18-12 with just over six minutes to play in the first half on a jump shot by junior guard Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield). The Inferno would hold on to the lead the remainder of the half and go into intermission with a 24-21 advantage.

Dominican (5-5, 1-4 NAC) would retake the lead early in the second half, and take their largest lead of the game, 38-32, with 10:39 left in the game.

With 6:10 remaining in the game Alverno would retake the lead for good on a 3-point field goal by sophomore guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) at 44-41. Dominican would get as close as two, but another 3-point basket by Allen with 55 second remaining would maintain the Inferno's hold on the game.

Alverno was forced into 24 turnovers compared to Dominican's 22, but the Inferno would outrebound their opponents for the second straight game, holding a 38-32 advantage on the boards.

Sorgi led Alverno in scoring with 17 points, rebounding with eight and in steals with four. Allen also broke into double-figures with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior forward Bre Miller (Racine, Wis./Horlick) chipped in nine points and six rebounds, and also had a game-high five assists.

Jessica Salinas (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led Dominican in scoring with 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting, while Megan Molloy (Chicago, Ill.) had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Stars.

The win is Alverno's first versus Dominican since Dec. 12, 2000, when the Inferno defeated the Stars 67-53 in Milwaukee. Alverno now trails the all-time series 2-9.

With the win Alverno matches last season's win total at five with 13 regular season games left to play. The Inferno also doubled last season's conference win total, now 2-5 in the NAC South Division.

Alverno will play their fifth game in eight days on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when they host Benedictine University at 7pm in Reiman Gymnasium.
