AURORA, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's basketball team was defeated by Aurora University, 78-65, in a Northern Athletics Conference game in Aurora, Ill.
Aurora (4-4, 2-1 NAC) got off to a quick 20-9 lead with 12:01 to play in the first half, but a cluster of steals and quick baskets by the Inferno (2-4, 1-3 NAC) would cut the lead to one at 24-23.
That would be as close as Alverno would get the rest of the game, as Aurora would end the half on a 16-4 run to lead, 40-27, at the break.
Things didn't get much better for the Inferno, as they would trail by as many as 22 in the second half. The Inferno shot 35-percent in the second period, including 0-of-6 from the 3-point arc. They would eventually close the gap back to 13, for the final score, 78-65.
Junior Lisa Sorgi (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield) led Alverno in scoring with 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting, and shot 9-of-12 from the free throw line, bringing her career free throw total to 169. This surpassed the previous all-time mark at Alverno, 166, set by Kim Murray in 2006.
Katie Salentine (Muskego, Wis.) led the Inferno on the glass with nine rebounds, and chipped in 14 points. Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bayview) would also hit doubles for the Inferno scoring 12.
The Inferno are next in action this weekend as they host Silver Lake College on Saturday, Dec. 13, and then Viterbo University on Sunday, Dec. 14. Both game times are set for 2pm in Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee.
