MILWAUKEE -- Alverno was swept by visiting Edgewood, 3-0, and then by North Park, 3-0, in a pair of matches in Reiman Gymnasium tonight. Edgewood defeated North Park, 3-1, in the other match of the triangular hosted by the Inferno.
In the first match the Edgewood Eagles (17-9, 9-3 Northern Athletics Conference) opened up with a 6-0 lead and cruised to a 25-18 opening-set victory over the Inferno (3-24, 0-10). The visitors took the second set 25-20 and the final 25-12 for the conference sweep.
The Inferno had 21 kills, but committed 21 attack errors in the match, while the Eagles had 41 kills and 18 errors for a solid .232 attack percentage.
No Inferno play tallied more than four kills in the match.
The first set versus North Park was a battle, that saw no lead by either team greater than three, but the Vikings (12-15 overall) hung on for the 26-24 extra-points victory.
With the momentum in their favor, the visiting Vikings took the final two sets 25-15 and 25-16 for the nonconference match sweep.
The Inferno improved their attack in the second match with 30 kills and only 17 errors for a .116 attack percentage, but the Vikings tallied 42 kills and committed only 12 errors for a .297 percentage.
Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) led the Inferno with seven kills, but committed a match-high nine errors.
Defensively Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) had a team-high 14 digs and added two blocks, while Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) added 10 digs.
The Inferno return to action tomorrow evening at Maranatha Baptist for a NAC match in Watertown.
