AURORA, Ill. – The Alverno cross country team took part in the 2018 NACC Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon at Oakhurst Forest Preserve in suburban Chicago. The Inferno finished with 323 points, which was 11th best in the field of the NACC Conference teams.
The Inferno's team score of 323 was its best since the 2014 season, when Alverno scored a total of 261 points, which was also the last time the event was hosted at the Oakhurst Forest Preserve.
Alverno was led by junior Laura Sierra, who took 87th overall while notching a time of 30:09.91 to lead the Inferno at the championship meet. Sierra registered the first 61 points of the meet for Alverno.
Freshman Isabel Ovalle capped off her rookie season with a time of 33:30.23 finishing just inside the top-100 at 99th position overall while scoring 64 points for the Inferno.
A trio from the squad crossed the finish in succession led by junior Carina Jimenez with a 34:39.94; followed by junior Leah Badke with a 34:50.02; while sophomore Kaitlynn Johnson tallied a 34:52.66 just behind Badke for the fifth and final scoring positions for the Inferno.
As a team Alverno took 11th position of the 11 teams to score with its 323 points. Earning the team title was Edgewood with a team score of 54, edging out Benedictine with 58 points and host Aurora with 59 points.
Concordia Wisconsin was fourth with 92 points, followed by MSOE, Wisconsin Lutheran, Dominican, Concordia Chicago, Lakeland and Mount Mary in the top-10.
Alverno will look to build upon its strongest team score in four years and look ahead to the 2019 season.
