GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Alverno cross country team got its season started on Saturday afternoon at the Tom Barry Invitational held at Colburn Park. The Inferno finished in 11th positions of the 13 teams to compete at the 5-Kilometer race.
The Inferno finished with 334 points at the event as the team contested both a tough field and high temperatures in Green Bay.
Sophomore Kaitlynn Johnson led the way for the Inferno as she completed the course with a time of 31:25.5, which was good enough for 63rd place. Second on the team was junior Carina Jimenez, finishing with a 31:48.3.
Third to score for the Inferno was junior Leah Badke with a time of 33:11.0, while freshman Isabel Ovalle took the fourth scoring position for Alverno with a time of 34:33.1 in her collegiate debut. Senior Elizabeth Gamillo was the fifth and final member of the Inferno squad to finish the loop, clocking in with a time of 37:31.3.
Host school St. Norbert won the event with a 28-point effort, edging out Carroll by just six points. Fellow Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference foes Wisconsin Lutheran, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Lakeland and Mount Mary also competed at the event
Silver Lake College and Finlandia ran as incomplete teams and did not record a team score.
Alverno will return to the course this upcoming Saturday as the Inferno will travel to Concordia Wisconsin to take part in the Ken Weidt Cross Country Classic in Mequon, Wisconsin.
