GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Alverno College cross country team began the 2017 season at St. Norbert College's Tom Barry Invitational Saturday morning at Colburn Park.
The Inferno runners placed 13th in the season-opening event and were paced by Leslie Ortiz' impressive finish of 24 minutes, 43 seconds in her first collegiate meet.
The host Green Knights placed five runners in the top five to capture the title at their home race. The College of St. Scholastica's Casey Hovland took the individual title with a time of 17:59.6 in the 5K.
Tanya Salentine followed Ortiz at 30:55.6, with Leah Badke (32:14.7) and Elizabeth Gamillo (33:44.3) close behind. Maya Jean Kasch (38:37.8) and Carissa Babcock (46:06.6) rounded out the Inferno times.
Alverno returns to action Saturday, September 9 at the Ken Weidt Invitational hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin. The women's event begins at 11 a.m. in Mequon.
