MEQUON, Wis. -- Three Inferno runners opened the season with personal best times at the 2014 Falcon Invite on Concordia University Wisconsin's campus Saturday afternoon as Alverno College placed 13th of 16 teams.
Jamie Hoernke paced the Inferno with a time of 27 minutes, 35.9 seconds, nearly a minute and a half better than her previous personal best in the 6K.
Katie Yun was just two runners behind as she took nearly 20 seconds off her personal record with a finish of 27:38.1.
Newcomers Tiffani Brenneman and Alli Weil followed in their first collegiate event with times of 28:47.3 and 28:51.9, and sophomore Kayla Soliday knocked nearly three minutes off her previous personal record as she crossed the finish line in 32:33.5. Sophomore Courtney Cornella-Carlson rounded out the Inferno's times with a 36:51.4.
Alverno tallied 596 points and placed in front of Dominican University (637), Mount Mary University (655) and Prairie State College (746), while four other teams competed but did not have enough runners finish for a team score.
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse had nine of the top 10 finishers and won the annual event with 15 points, including Laura Mead who won the individual title with a finish of 21:32.9.
The Inferno returns to action next Saturday at Ripon College's Red Hawk Invitational at Tuscumbia Golf Course in Green Lake. The women's race is set for a 10 a.m. start.
