Mernitz has been on staff at Alverno as assistant volleyball coach since 2008.

In addition to the years under her belt as an Alverno assistant coach, Mernitz has extensive coaching experience at both the collegiate and club levels. From 2005-07, Mernitz served as the assistant coach for the MIT women's volleyball club. She also headed up the 17U team of the Rock County (Wis.) JO club volleyball team in 1998 in the middle of a stint at Beloit College as the assistant women's tennis coach and assistant women's softball coach from 1996-2000.

Besides her familiarity on the court as a coach, Mernitz was a member of the Kalamazoo College (Mich.) women's volleyball and women's softball teams, playing volleyball in 1993 and softball from 1993-96.

Mernitz has also experienced success on the volleyball court in post-collegiate competition at the USAV Adult Volleyball National Tournament, appearing on various teams. In 2003, Mernitz earned a spot on the all-tournament team as her squad won the gold medal in women's B/BB UVolley. She also earned a bronze medal in the women's B tournament in 2004 as well as silver and bronze medals in the B/BB Coed tournaments in 2005. Mernitz also stays active on the tennis court by competing in USTA tennis leagues and tournaments.

In addition to her coaching duties and athletic endeavors, Mernitz is also an assistant professor of physical science at Alverno.

Mernitz graduated from Kalamazoo with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1996, then went on to earn a master's degree in human nutrition and a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism from Tufts University (Mass.) in 2002 and 2006, respectively.
