FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Alverno volleyball team travelled to the Sadoff Gymnasium on the campus of Marian University on Tuesday evening for a conference matchup against the host Sabres. Marian won the three-set match by the scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-20.
With the three set scores close Alverno had 20-plus kills for the second consecutive match as the Inferno finished the match with 23 on the evening led by freshman Kierra Sherlock with nine on the evening as she attempted 42 attacks on the night. Junior Ari Rehberg had five kills, while classmate Neilee Newton put down three kills.
Alverno as a team connected on seven service aces including two each by Rehberg, junior Morgan Lemner, and sophomore Alex McMath. The Inferno got one ace by sophomore Isabelle Gemza, while she also collected two kills. Senior Melanie Coffey and freshman Kenzi Kaminski each had two kills on the night.
Defensively Alverno combined for a pair of blocks as Rehberg, Sherlock, Kaminski, and McMath all combined for the pair. McMath also led the team with 17 assists, and added five digs on the evening. Sherlock led the team with 13 digs, while Lemner added nine and Newton chipped in with seven.
Alverno had an early 2-0 lead in the opening set before a kill by Rehberg made it 3-1. The Sabres tied the score at five before taking a two-point lead at 7-5. Alverno was able to tie the score at three separate times at 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9 before the Sabres went one a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 advantage.
However the Inferno fought right back behind service by Gemza and poor attacking by Marian to put Alverno back in front at 15-13. The Sabres were able to fight back and knot the score at 17 before closing out the set at an 8-3 clip to take the set 25-20.
In the second set Alverno had nearly half of its kills on the match with 11 during the second stanza. Marian took an early 6-2 lead before Rehberg connected on a kill to give service back to the red and white. Marian responded with another 6-2 swing before Coffey connected on a kill to pull the Sabres back within five at 11-6. The Sabre lead swelled to 20-10 before Alverno scored four unanswered points including a kill by Sherlock to make the score 20-14 in favor of the home team.
Alverno attempted the chip away at the deficit but were unable to in a 25-17 set loss.
The third set was close through the first stages of the period as the score was tied one 12 separate occasions through the first 30 points at 15-15. The next five points went in favor of the Sabres as Marian took a 20-15 lead before Alverno closed back within three at 23-20. However, Marian was able to get the final two points of the set to take the match three sets to none, winning the third 25-20.
Alverno (1-18, 0-6 NACC) will be back on the road for two more matches this weekend beginning with league-favorite Aurora on Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Aurora, Illinois. The following day, Alverno visits Benedictine for an early 10:00 a.m. start in Lisle, Illinois.
