Volleyball Visits Iowa to take Part in Central/Grinnell Invitational

IOWA – The Alverno volleyball team took part in the 2019 Central/Grinnell Volleyball Invitational this weekend and were unable to pick up a victory over the two-day, two-city four-match event.

On Friday the Inferno fell to the co-host Grinnell Pioneers and the Simpson Storm, both in straight sets before dropping a pair to the Central Dutch and the Bethel Royals in three-set matches.

Over the weekend the Inferno were led by freshman Kierra Sherlock with 24 kills over the four-match span, while junior Neilee Newton was second on the team with 18 kills. Sophomore Alex McMath added seven kills from her setter position, while amassing a team-high 47 assists at the tournament.

As a team Alverno totaled 14 service aces over the four-match span with both Sherlock and Newton leading the way with four aces apiece. Senior Melanie Coffey and sophomore Isabelle Gemza added two aces each.

The defensive effort was led by junior Morgan Lemner, who had a team-best 29 digs on the weekend. McMath was second on the team with 26 digs, while Sherlock added 21 and Newton tallied 18 of her own.

Alverno vs. Grinnell

The Inferno met the Pioneers in their home gymnasium in Grinnell, Iowa. Alverno dropped the three-set match by the scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-16.

Alverno got four kills apiece by Sherlock and Newton in the match, with McMath picking up eight assists. Newton added two assists, while Alverno as a team had five service aces including two apiece by Newton and Sherlock.

Alverno vs. Simpson

In the team's second match of the weekend, Alverno took on the Storm of Simpson in a neutral site contest at Grinnell. The Inferno fought in a closely contested first set as Alverno fell 25-20, before dropping the latter two sets by the scores of 25-14 and 25-10.

In the match it was Newton to lead the team with five kills on the contest, while Sherlock had three and Coffey had a pair. McMath tallied 10 helpers, while Coffey led the team with a pair of aces. Lemner picked up eight digs to lead the team defensively, with McMath added five to finish second for the team against the Storm.

Alverno vs. Central

As the team moved ahead to Saturday, the Inferno took on their second host of the weekend as the Inferno met the Central Dutch in Pella, Iowa. Central swept the Inferno in straight sets, with set scores of 25-14, 25-10, and 25-12.

Sherlock highlighted the match for the Inferno as she had a team-best 10 digs, and was also tied with Lemner for the team lead in digs with 10. McMath had 16 assists on the match, while she and Newton led the team with one ace apiece. Freshman Kenzi Kaminski had two kills in the match as well.

Alverno vs. Bethel

The final match of the weekend saw the Inferno take on Bethel out of Minnesota. The Royals controlled the opening set by a 25-8 score before Alverno came back and fell in the second set 25-20. Bethel ended up with the sweep, taking the third set by a 25-14 score.

Sherlock had seven kills as Newton added six and McMath netted 13 assists. Gemza notched two aces with Sherlock adding the third for the Inferno. The team had a balanced defensive effort as Lemner tallied 10 digs, while both Gemza and McMath had eight apiece. Coffey registered the team's lone block of the weekend in the contest.

Alverno (1-12) will return to conference play on Wednesday, when the Inferno visit the Lakeland Muskies for a 7 p.m. first serve in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
