ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Alverno volleyball team made it two wins in a row on Wednesday evening, as the Inferno closed out Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on the road against Rockford at the Seaver Center.
The Inferno won the match in straight sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17 to earn its fourth victory on the season. As a team Alverno hit .202 on the night with 34 kills and seven service aces, while also combining for four blocks and amassing 45 points on the night.
Leading the way on offense for the Inferno was freshman Catie Flannery, who tallied a match-high 10 kills. Senior Cailey Jeske notched eight kills, while sophomore Arianna Rehberg picked up seven kills as she did not commit an error on the night in 15 swings.
Freshman Alex McMath also added to the offense with three kills, while leading the team with 19 assists on the evening. Junior Sam Korn tallied nine assists and a pair of kills, while sophomore Neilee Newton had four kills and even chipped in with three assists of her own.
Defensively sophomore Morgan Lemner once again led the effort with a match-high 16 digs on the evening, while she also chipped in with one assist. Korn and Flannery each had eight digs, while McMath tallied six digs. Jeske had three assisted blocks, while McMath and Korn each had a hand in two blocks apiece.
In the opening set Alverno jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead before Rockford cut back into the lead and evened the score at seven. After the score was tied at 10, Jeske connected on a kill to spark a 6-0 run, which included a service ace by Flannery. The lead for Alverno swelled to 19-12 before Rockford chipped away and cut Alverno's lead to 22-19.The Inferno closed out the set as Rehberg connected on a kill.
Alverno took the first two sets as Flannery opened the second set with a pair of kills; Rockford then responded with three points before Alverno wrestled the lead back at 6-4 as Jeske and Flannery collected kills. The back-and-forth second set continued before the Inferno stormed ahead behind an ace from Flannery and kills by Korn and Jeske before Rehberg collected the final kill to lock up the set.
In the third Alverno built out a 10-4 lead as Newton, Rehberg, McMath and Flannery collected kills while building up the lead. The Inferno held a 15-7 advantage, before Rockford tallied five unanswered to close the gap down to three. Rehberg connected on a kill to get the service back while Korn drilled a service ace to keep the offense firing.
Late in the third Alverno got an ace by McMath, before Flannery added a kill to give the Inferno match point. Korn put down the final kill to give Alverno its first conference victory of the season.
Alverno (4-24, 1-11 NACC) will close out the 2018 season with a pair of non-conference matches on Friday, when Alverno visits Dubuque for a 2:30 p.m. start, followed by a 5 p.m. match at Loras to close out the season.
