Volleyball Closes Out September Home Slate with Loss to Lakeland

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno volleyball team played its second and last home match in the month of September on Tuesday evening, and fell to the Lakeland Muskies in a straight-set decision.

Alverno was led by freshman Catie Flannery with six kills on the night, while she also led the team with eight digs defensively. Sophomore Arianna Rehberg had five kills on the evening, while senior Cailey Jeske and freshman Alex McMath both ended the match with four apiece.

McMath and Jeske both led the team with two aces apiece, while junior Sam Korn collected 11 assists in the effort. Sophomore Atiya Mansfield had six assists, while sophomore Morgan Lemner had four digs on the defensive side of the ball.

The early going saw both sides evenly matched as the opening stanza was tied at 10 through the first 20 points. Lakeland scored the next three before Flannery picked up a kill to pull Alverno back within two. The turning point of the opening set was a pair of back-to-back blocks for the Muskies, to give Lakeland a 16-12 lead before the team took the set by a 25-14 score.

In the second, Lakeland jumped out to a quick lead at 10-3 before the Inferno fought back within four behind several Lakeland miscues and a kill from Jeske. Lakeland's lead ballooned to 18-7 before the Muskies ultimately took the second set by a 25-11 score.

The third set saw Alverno fall behind again by a large 11-2 score, but the Inferno mounted an 8-2 run behind the strong service of McMath, including a pair of aces to get Alverno back within a 13-10 margin. Lakeland rallied again to take a 22-13 advantage before a pair of points for the Inferno including one kill by McMath. Rehberg notched a kill late in the set but it was not enough as the Muskies finished off the match with a straight-set win, taking the third by a 25-17 score.

Alverno (2-13, 0-2 NACC) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon to continue NACC play beginning with Concordia Chicago at 12 p.m. The match will be followed by a non-conference tilt with Lake Forest at 2 p.m.
