FOND DU LAC, WIS.--The Alverno college volleyball team were able to take two straight sets against Marian University but fell in the fifth set 15-12.
Marian took two quick sets over the Inferno until Alverno turned the tides in the third set. After falling behind 10-6, Alverno and Marian were tied at 11. Two kills by Cailey Jeske and a service error for the Sabres saw the Inferno claim the lead at 13-12. Alverno would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the set. The Inferno gained a set on the Sabres 25-20.
With momentum on their favor, Alverno started the fourth set with a quick 7-4 lead. A kill by Arianna Rehberg and a service ace from Morgan Lemner late in the set extended the Inferno advantage to 21-15. A late push for Marian was unsuccessful as Alverno knotted the match at two.
In the fifth and final set, both teams saw the opportunity to collect the match. Marian held a slim lead at 9-7 when a 4-0 run for the Sabres expanded their lead to 13-7. Alverno came as close to tying the set with a Marian service error however, an Inferno ball handling error sealed the match for Marian.
The Alverno offense found success in the third set recording 14 kills with only five errors for a kill percentage of .231. Cailey Jeske led the Inferno in kills finishing the match with 17. Jessica Wewers chipped in with 12 kills as Alyssa Reinke collected 17 digs.
Alverno College returns home for a match with Lake Forest on Tuesday, Oct. 17 with a start time set for 7:30 p.m.
