MILWAUKEE, WIS.--The Alverno College volleyball team dropped a non-conference match against Maranatha Baptist Tuesday evening.
The Inferno started the game with a 9-4 advantage. After the Sabercats inched closer at 13-10, Alverno scored seven straight unanswered points. The wide lead created by the Inferno was enough to take the first set off two kills from Cailey Jeske and Arianna Rehberg 25-16.
Maranatha regrouped in the second set turing the tides and taking a quick 7-4 advantage. A 5-0 run for the Sabercats forced an Inferno timeout at 19-9. Two final kills for the Sabercats knotted the match at one.
The Sabercats again opened the set leading 4-1. However, the Inferno fought back to cut the Sabercat lead to 8-6. Once again Maranatha pieced together a 5-0 run forcing a Alverno timeout at 19-9. Maranatha closed the set with two kills taking the one set lead 25-14.
With momentum on their side, Maranatha controlled a 11-4 advantage to start the next set. The larget deficit was too much for the Inferno to comeback as Maranatha took the set 25-15.
In the final set, Maranatha found themselves with a quick 15-9 lead. Alverno continue to chip away at the Sabercats advantage but were unable to complete the comeback. Maranatha took the match 25-22.
Senior Jessica Wewers finished the match with 20 kills off 39 total attacks. Cailey Jeske chipped in with 18 kills while Sam Korn added 39 assists. The Inferno recorded the best hitting percentage of the match during set one with .517.
Alverno will travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. as they resume conference play at Marian Friday, Oct. 13 with a 7 p.m. start time.
