MADISON, WIS.--The Alverno College volleyball team fell to Edgewood College in NACC 3-1 on Wednesday evening.
Both teams started the first set trading point for point with the score being tied at five. A five point swing for the Inferno gave them the slim advantage at 10-9. Another 4-0 run for Alverno helped the Inferno regain the lead at 16-13. The Eagles saw to come back in the set as they rallied to tie the set at 24. An Edgewood attack error and a service ace by Cailey Jeske gave Alverno the first set.
With the momentum heading into the second set, the Inferno took a quick 6-3 lead. Alverno held the lead for the majority of the set however, a five point swing for the Eagles saw Edgewood tie the set and later claim the lead. Edgewood clung to a slim lead at 23-20 however, an Alverno service error and an Eagle service ace knotted the game at 1-1.
Edgewood came out in the third set with momentum quickly collecting a 12-5 lead. Alverno could not recover from the fast start as the Eagles took set three 25-11.
Once again Edgewood started the fourth set taking a 9-3 advantage. A 9-0 run for the Eagles propelled Edgewood to 18-6. An Eagles kill finished the game in their favor 3-1.
Offensively, the Inferno were lead by Cailey Jeske and Jessica Wewers who both finished the day with nine kills. Wewers also added two service aces. Sophomore Sam Korn finished the day with 15 assists. Alverno saw their best kill percentage in the second set finishing at .241.
Alverno looks to gear up for their double-header match against Mount Mary University and Beloit College Saturday, Sept. 23 with the first match beginning at 10 a.m.
