Volleyball Suffer Setback on First Day of Knox Tournament

GALESBURG--The Alverno College volleyball team suffered a loss in the first game of the Knox Tournament Friday afternoon losing to host Knox College 3-0.

The Prairie Fire started the first set with a quick 10-4 advantage over the Inferno. A few set errors by the Inferno widened the Prairie Fire lead to 16-8. A kill for Knox College sealed the first set 25-16.

The Inferno changed the momentum in the second set taking an early 3-0 lead. Another 3-0 run for Alverno put them ahead at 8-2. However, the Prairie Fire would retaliate and chip away at the Inferno lead with a 5-0 run. The following minutes saw both teams trading 3-0 runs with Knox College ahead at 24-18. A late push by the Inferno would not be enough as they dropped the second set 25-20.

The momentum from the previous set carried to the third set as the Prairie Fire used a four point swing to gain a 8-3 advantage. The Inferno responded with a four point run of their own cutting the Knox College lead to 14-11. Again the Inferno looked to make another late push coming within one point of tying the game at 24. A Knox College kill took the victory for the Prairie Fire 25-23.

Cailey Jeske led the way for the Inferno in kills finishing the day with 13. Jessica Wewers recorded eight kills while Atiya Mansfield finished the day with 15 assists.
