MILWAUKEE--The Alverno College volleyball team picked up their first NACC win of the 2017 season with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Rockford University Wednesday inside Reiman Gymnasium.
It was all Inferno early as Alverno propelled to a 9-1 lead. Three straight points for Alverno resuled in a Regents timeout at 16-5. The fast start by the Inferno led to a 25-17 victory of set 1.
The second set started with both the Regents and Inferno trading point for point. However, a three point swing for the Inferno gave them the 13-9 advantage. The Regents would get as close as two points from tying the Inferno but a kill by Kaylee Leslie sealed the set for Alverno at 25-19.
In the third, set Rockford stole the first two points until the Inferno responded with three points of their own to take a 5-3 lead. Alverno would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the set. A service error by the Regents saw the Inferno take the game 25-18.
"We really wanted to come into tonight and have a ton of execution." Said Head Coach Susan Peterson "I think our passers really stepped up tonight and did a really good job of getting us in system."
Jessica Wevers led the Inferno in kills with 12 for a .647 kill percentage. Kaylee Leslie tallied 8 kills for a .471 kill percentage. The Inferno recorded 13 service aces as Cailey Jeske accounted for 8 of them. "I think she is doing a really good job. She is really being a threat to other teams." Peterson added about Jeske.
The Inferno go on the road this weekend as they participate in the Knox Tournament with the first game beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
