Volleyball Split Day One of MSOE Invitational

MILWAUKEE-- The Alverno College volleyball team went 1-1 in day one of the 2017 MSOE Invitational starting with a victory over Maranatha Baptist 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-23) before suffering their first loss of the season to Central 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19).

The Inferno jumped out to an early 15-5 lead. Alverno would then go onto score five straight points until the Sabercats could answer. Maranatha was unable to mount a comeback as the Inferno took the first set 25-16.

In the second set, Maranatha fought hard with Alverno tying the set at eight early. Alverno then scored six unanswered points to take a 14-8 lead until the Sabercats were able to score. Maranatha tied the set at 20 but a kill by Jessica Wewers sealed the set for Alverno at 25-23.

With the advantage heading into the final set, Alverno jumped early on the Sabercats 8-2. Maranatha responded with a run of their own taking the lead at 21-15. The Inferno rallied late in the set to tie the set at 23. However, Alverno would steal the final two points to claim victory 3-0.

Jessica Wewers led the way for the Inforno with 10 kills while Neilee Newton added eight. Freshman Atiya Mansfield added 17 assists while Cailey Jeske led the team in aces with three.

The second match of the night saw Alverno and Central trade points early in set one. Central put together a seven point run that was the deciding factor in the set taking the victory 25-16.

Central carried their momentum into the second set taking an early 9-5 lead. The Inferno then narrowed the gap to 21-20 however, Central was able to claim the set 25-22.

Central sprang to an early 13-8 lead but were unable to gain the upper hand. Central’s four straight points took the match 3-0.

Offensively the Inferno were lead by Cailey Jeske and Atiya Mansfield who finished with five kills a piece. Mansfield also recored 12 assists in the match.

Morgan Lemner added two aces from the service line while Neilee Newton added five digs to the defensive effort.

The Inferno look to bounce back as they return for day two of the MSOE Invitational against Beloit College at 10 a.m before closing out the invitational against Illinois Tech at 12 p.m.
