Volleyball Completes MSOE Invitational

MILWAUKEE—Alverno College Volleyball were defeated by Beloit before a near victory over Illinois Tech at the 2017 MSOE Invitational.

Alverno controlled the majority of the first set as they held a 10-5 lead at one point. Back-to-back service errors and a kill by Jessica Wewers propelled the Inferno to lead at 17-9. Alverno took the first set by a score of 25-18.

Beloit bounced back in the second set taking a 10-3 lead forcing an Inferno timeout. Out of the timeout, the Buccaneers continued to connect with a 22-13 lead. Beloit evened the match at one set a piece.

The Buccaneers saw to continue their success as they jumped out on the Inferno 13-5. Beloit later rattled off four straight points which resulted in an Inferno timeout. Three straight attacking errors sealed the set for Beloit at 25-13.

In the final set of the first match, Alverno competed closely with Beloit making the score tied at 10 at one point. However, Beloit took the match by a final score of 3-1.

Jessica Wewers again lead the Inferno in kills with 14 followed closely by Cailey Jeske with 12. Atiya Mansfield tallied 38 assists along with Alyssa Reinke recording 12 digs.

The last match of the MSOE Invitational saw the Inferno volleyball team take on Illinois Tech. Throughout the first set, Illinois Tech a small advantage at 19-17. Two straight kills from the Inferno tied the set at 19. However, the Scarlet Hawks took a slim 24-20 lead causing an Inferno timeout.

Out of the timeout, Alverno scored three straight points to narrow the Scarlet Hawks lead to 24-23. Illinois Tech scored the final point to take the first set 25-23.

Alverno saw to take control of the second set claiming a 10-3 early lead. The Scarlet Hawks fought back to tie the set at 16 until Alverno took the set scoring two straight kills at 25-20.

Illinois Tech took the advantage in set three as they held a 9-3 score before Alverno could retaliate. The Inferno chipped away at the Scarlet Hawks score to tie the set at 16. After an Inferno timeout, Illinois Tech took the set 25-19 after a set error.

The last set picked up where the two teams left off as neither side would hold a lead greater than one early. Again, the Inferno would regroup after a timeout, scoring five straight points to cut the Scarlet Hawks lead to 18-17. Alverno went on to force a fifth and final set after another 3-0 run.

Illinois Tech started on a run of their own, recording five straight points to start the fifth set. Alverno and Illinois Tech traded points yet again to tie the game at 14. An attack error and service ace for the Scarlet Hawks stole the victory by a final score of 16-14.

Melissa Weyand led all scorers with 23 kills while Jessica Wewers added 18. Atiya Mansfield recorded 52 assists while Alyssa Reinke collected three aces. Due to her play in the tournament, Junior Cailey Jeske was named MSOE Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Alverno returns home to face Rockford University on Wednesday Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
