Alverno Opens Season With Sweep Of Mount Mary

MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Mount Mary University Friday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium.

The crosstown rivals battled in a back-and-forth in the opening set, but the host Inferno (1-0) came away with the 28-26 win. Alverno then breezed through the second set, 25-10, before coming away with a 25-22 third set win to complete the sweep.

The Inferno finished the match with an impressive .365 attack percentage and held the visiting Blue Angels (0-1) to .066.

Jessica Wewers began her senior season with a match-high 13 kills at a .750 clip as she committed just a single error on 16 attempts.

Cailey Jeske added nine kills and Melissa Weyand added eight while Alyssa Reinke led with four of Alverno's 14 service aces.

Rookie setter Atiya Mansfield opened up her collegiate career with 21 assists and Sam Korn added 10.

On the defensive side, Jeske had eight digs and Wewers had five blocks (three solo) to lead all players.

Alverno returns to the court Tuesday as it hosts Beloit College at 7 p.m.
