MILWAUKEE -- For the first time in 10 years and just the second time in program history Alverno College earned at conference victory -- at home. The Inferno defeated visiting Rockford University, 3-2, for the first home league win since the 2006 season when Alverno topped Dominican University, 3-1.
After the visiting Regents (0-6, 0-2 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) took the opening set, 25-21, the Inferno (2-9, 1-1 NACC) won the next two, 25-15 and 25-20, before Rockford won the fourth, 25-19, to force a deciding fifth set.
With the set tied at 5-5, the Inferno scored the next four points and remained in the lead the rest of the way. The Regents made it interesting as they cut the Inferno lead to 13-11, but a Rockford service error followed by an Alyssa Reinke ace clinched the match for the home team.
Korn and Karissa Minster directed the passing game with 16 assists each, which marked Korn's first double-double of the season. Reinke led all players with four service aces, including her match-winner.
In addition to the 10 year NACC-home drought, the win snapped a 12-match skid in league play and nine-match streak this season.
Alverno hits the road for four matches at Ripon College's Red Hawks Invitational this Friday and Saturday before returning home to NACC play next Wednesday versus Aurora University.
