MILWAUKEE -- Visiting Lakeland College took down Alverno College 3-1 in the Inferno's final home match of the season Wednesday evening in Reiman Gymnasium.
The first three sets finished with identical scores, 25-22, with the Muskies (14-14, 7-3 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) taking the first two, and the Inferno (9-17, 0-10 NACC) the third.
Lakeland, who secured a spot in the 2014 NACC Women's Volleyball Tournament with the victory, won the fourth set 25-18 to clinch the match.
The Inferno trailed 20-15 in the third set before three-straight points started by a Jessica Wewers' kill cut the deficit to just two.
A Muskies' attack error would bring the Inferno within a point, before Wewers would tie the set at 21-21 with another kill.
Lakeland came out hot in the fourth and was up 6-0 in a flash. The visitors allowed the Inferno to creep back in the set, 12-11, but rallied off seven-straight points for a lead they would not relinquish.
Alverno tallied 46 kills, led by Ortner's 13 and Wewers' 12, and committed just 18 attack errors for a .189 hitting percentage -- topping Lakeland's .172 -- but had 12 service errors and didn't manage an ace on the night. Though Lakeland committed 11 service errors, the team put down 10 aces on the Inferno.
Cali Trepp led the Inferno with 20 digs in the final home match of her career and Danielle Schilawski tallied 18 for her sixth-straight game with double-digit digs. Wewers tallied six blocks to aid the Inferno defense that forced 23 Muskie attack errors.
Alverno closes out the season on Saturday at Concordia University Chicago. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
