MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College went up 2-0 on visiting Benedictine University, but the Eagles swooped back for the final three sets and spoiled the Inferno's Senior Night.
Lone senior Cali Trepp was honored in a pre-match ceremony to celebrate her four-year career with the Inferno. Trepp tallied eight kills, two aces and a team-high 20 digs in the team's salute to her.
Prior to tonight's match, Alverno had never taken a set from its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe in 10 meetings (30 sets). That changed when the Inferno took the first two tonight, 25-22 and 25-20.
Alverno (9-10, 0-3 NACC) committed just one attack error in the opening set for a .312 attack percentage, and finished the night at .161, slightly better than the Eagles' .155.
The Eagles (5-15, 3-0) evened the match with 25-14 and 25-22 set wins, and didn't trail the host Inferno in either of the third or fourth sets.
Alverno went up 3-0 in the final frame, but Benedictine rallied, tied the match at 9-9, and went on for the 15-13 victory, preventing the Inferno from making another blemish in the all-time series.
Emily Ortner had a team-high 14 kills and Jessica Wewers added nine. Chelsey Powless had 19 assists, Meranda Masse had 16, while five Inferno players collected two services aces apiece: Ortner, Trepp, Danielle Schilawski, Alyssa Mazur and Genevieve Bauman.
The Inferno hits the road for three-straight road matches, beginning with a NACC match at Edgewood College on Friday.
