HANCOCK, Mich. -- Alverno College won two of its three matches at the Finlandia University Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
The Inferno (9-9) defeated the host Lions, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19) in the opener, downed Mount Mary University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-9), before it dropped the final match of the day to Maranatha Baptist University, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22).
Chelsey Powless led Alverno with 13 assists, while Dakota Powless led the defense with 16 digs and Wewers added three blocks.
The Inferno hit an impressive .271 against the winless Blue Angels (0-17). Skye Kapinus had match high honors with 12 kills and Wewers added 10.
Meranda Masse directed the offense with a team-high 18 assists, Chelsey Powless added 12.
Defensively three players reached double-digit digs as Ortner and Danielle Schilawski led with 11 and Dakota Powless had 10.
Schilawski also had four of the Inferno's 12 service aces in the match.
The Inferno won its seventh-straight set with a 26-24 first-set win against Maranatha (16-5), but couldn't pick up another in its third match of the day as the Sabercats won the next three.
Ortner led the offense with 11 kills, while Masse and Powless nearly matched assist marks with 17 and 16 apiece.
Defensively four Inferno players reached doubles led by Ortner's 13 digs. Dakota Polwess had 12 and Schilawski and Alyssa Mazur added 10 apiece.
Alverno returns home for its next action, a 7 p.m. match versus Benedictine University on Tuesday.
