MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College lost to North Park University in a five-set match before sweeping Kuyper College in three to close out play at the Inferno-Angel Classic Saturday in Reiman Gymnasium.
After dropping the opening-two sets to the Vikings, 25-16 and 25-17, the Inferno rallied and took the next two 25-20 and 25-21, to force a fifth and deciding frame.
The Inferno managed just one kill in the fifth, while the Vikings (7-11) tallied eight for the 15-5 match-deciding win.
Ortner and Danielle Schilawski dug out 25 Viking attacks as Alverno had a season-high 80 digs in the loss.
Chelsey Powless matched her season-high, which she set last night, with 31 assists, and Wewers tallied five blocks.
The Inferno (7-7) had no problem taming the Cougars (5-4) in the tournament's final match with wins of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-19.
Ortner anchored a balanced attack with 10 kills, Wewers added nine, Dakota Powless six and Weyand five.
Chelsey Powless had 25 assists on the team's 36 kills, while Ortner and Schilawski again led the team in digs with 13 apiece.
Kuyper and North Park both defeated Finlandia University (4-12) in the day's other two matches at Alverno. The Cougars won 3-2, while the Vikings earned the 3-0 sweep for a 4-0 record at the classic tournament co-hosted by Alverno and Mount Mary University.
After its nine-match homestand the Inferno hits the road for four-straight matches beginning with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Aurora University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
