MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College opened the Inferno-Angel Classic with a pair of 3-0 victories over visiting Silver Lake College and Northland International University this evening in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Inferno had little trouble with the Lakers, sweeping the visitors 25-18, 25-6 and 25-15.
An impressive .342 attack percentage by the Inferno -- with 30 kills and just seven attack errors -- and 12 service aces accounted for a majority of the Inferno's points.
Alyssa Mazur tallied four aces, while Powless added three.
Defensively, Ortner and Danielle Schilawski tied for team-high honors with nine digs, Mazur added eight and Powless seven. Wewers led the block with a pair of block assists.
In the nightcap Alverno continued its impressive play in the first set versus the Pioneers (4-3) with a 25-6 victory, but nearly gave away a 24-18 lead in the second. However the Inferno hung one for the 27-25 win, and finished off the Pioneers with a 25-12 third set score.
Though the Inferno amassed 36 kills, it was on just a .176 clip, but the service game was again strong with 11 aces led by Chelsey Powless' career-high six. The rookie also put up a career-high 31 assists.
Ortner recorded a double-double with match-highs of 13 kills and 22 digs. Wewers and Dakota Powless added seven kills, while Cali Trepp added five.
Schilawski and Dakota Powless also had 14 and 13 digs on the defensive side of the net.
In the other matches at Reiman Gymnasium, Finlandia University (4-10) defeated Northland International 3-1, and also downed Silver Lake 3-1.
Alverno continues play in the classic tournament tomorrow versus North Park University at 10 a.m. and Kuyper College at 2:45 p.m.
