MILWAUKEE -- It took Alverno College five sets to knock off visiting Beloit College, but the Inferno needed just three to sweep Mount Mary University and pick up a pair of victories in a home triangular Saturday evening in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Inferno earned a 25-13 opening set win over Beloit, but the Buccaneers took the second in extra points, 29-27, and went ahead in the match with a 25-14 set-three win.
With the match on the line, the Inferno blew away the Bucs in the fourth set, 25-4, needing just four servers in the set. Dakota Powless served up the first seven points for the Inferno who jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Meranda Masse had just one serve for the Inferno, but the hosts still led 8-2, and then 14-straight serves by Emily Ortner extended the lead to 22-3. The Bucs got their final point of the set on a service ace, but Melissa Weyand served for the Inferno's final set points.
Things wouldn't come so easy for Alverno in the fifth and deciding set as neither team led by more than three. Beloit looked like they would come away with the win, up 13-12 with the serve in hand, but the Inferno took a 14-13 lead, and after giving up a tying point, went up 15-14 on a Cali Trepp kill and sealed the match victory on a block by Jessica Wewers and Skye Kapinus.
Ortner led both sides of the net with 14 kills, 22 digs and added five aces. Trepp tallied 13 kills, Weyand 10 and Kapinus eight for a balanced Inferno attack, while Masse led all with 29 assists and earned a double-double with 13 digs.
Dakota Powless chipped in 11 digs, Chelsey Powless nine, Trepp and Danielle Schilawski had seven apiece as the Inferno had a season-high 76 in the five-setter, and also posted a season-best 50 kills on the offensive side.
In the nightcap the Inferno rolled though the Blue Angels, 25-12, 25-10 and 25-19.
Alverno hit .278 compared to Mount Mary's .000, and had 11 service aces -- led by Alyssa Mazur's five -- to MMU's zero.
Wewers connected for a match-high 13 kills on 20 attempts, while Weyand added eight and Ortner seven.
Chelsey Powless had a match-high 19 assists and Ortner took honors with 15 digs. Dakota Powless also reached doubles with 11 digs in support of the Inferno defense.
Beloit (1-11) defeated Mount Mary (0-8) in three sets, 25-13, 25-17, 25-15.
Alverno (4-5) reaches the middle of its nine-match homestand with its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener on Tuesday versus Rockford College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
